GRACE ALLEN CONARROE
Mrs. Grace Allen Conarroe of Calhan, Colo., passed away Saturday, May 22, 1971 in the Good Samaritan Rest Home at Simla. She was 78.
She was born July 18, 1893, at Hastings, Nebraska, the youngest daughter of Jerry and Fannie Weinlich. She came to Calhan with her parents in 1898 where her father established a 1blacksmithing business. Her mother passsed away in 1906 and the family left Calhan in 1908 to take up residency in Telluride, Colo.
She attended high school at Telluride, Montrose and later at Osceola, Nebr.
Her father later remarried and the family returned to Colorado, settling at Parker. She was united in marriage to Lawrence Colbar Conarroe on Dec. 23, 1912, in Elbert, Colo.
After engaging in the restaurant business in Elbert for a few years, the Conarroes moved to a farm which they purchased, located about seven miles southeast of Calhan. The Depression set in and the family was forced to give
up the farm and all their belongings. They moved into the town of Calhan in 1927 where Mr. Conarroe was able to get a job with the El Paso County road maintenance department. He was with that department for 35 continuous years and retired in 1962.
He passed away in November of 1966 at the age of 79.
Grace Conarroe entered the business world in 1938, starting out as an insurance saleswoman. She later entered the real estate business and in 1958 became a licensed broker. She maintained a real estate office in Colorado Springs for a few years, but during the past 10 years had maintained only one office at her home in Calhan.
From about 1922 until 1965 she reported local news about Calhan and vicinity for various area newspapers. She enjoyed fairly good health throughout the years and only began to fail noteably six weeks ago. She entered the nursing home May 13.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Olive Hummel of Willamina, Ore., and Mrs. Shirleen Banuelos of Colorado Springs; one son, Percy, of Louisville; 11 grandchildren and· seven great grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. May 27 at the Calhan Cemetery.
Grace (Allen) Conarroe was named for the fiction writer Grace S. Richmond, who was born in and lived in New England. Although the Allen family claimed that Grace S. Richmond was related to Charlotte (Richmond) Allen, there is no evidence to support that.

Grace S. Richmond (1866–1959), novelist
Grace Louise Smith Richmond was born on March 31, 1866, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, the daughter of Catherine Amelia Kimball and Baptist clergyman and author, Dr. Charles Edward Smith (1835-1929). As a young lady Grace spent time in Syracuse, New York, and was educated at home with private tutors. In 1887 she married Dr. Nelson Guernsey Richmond of Fredonia, New York. She was a popular American romance novelist who created the Dr. R.P. Burns series and wrote a total of 24 books.
Nelson Guernsey Richmond (1855-1944) is son of Orson Richmond (1824-1904). Orson’s wife was Euphemia J. Guernsey Richmond (1825-1918). Nelson had a sister, Mary Richmond Place.
